AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of making your brand and content easy for AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot to find, trust and cite when they answer a question. Where SEO aims for a ranked link, AEO aims to be the source, or the recommendation, inside the answer itself.
This guide gives you a plain definition, how answer engines actually pick sources, the six outcomes AEO should be measured against, an eight-step AEO strategy, a before-and-after example, and the myths you can safely ignore. Every platform fact is current as of October 2026 and linked to its primary source.
What does AEO mean?
In marketing, AEO stands for answer engine optimization: improving how often, and how accurately, your brand appears in AI-generated answers. An "answer engine" is any system that responds with a synthesized answer instead of a list of links.
AEO grew out of earlier work on featured snippets and voice assistants, which also return a single answer. Today it mostly means optimizing for AI chat and AI search experiences that retrieve web pages, summarize them, and cite or recommend a handful of sources.
Outside marketing, the same letters mean other things. AEO is the NYSE ticker for American Eagle Outfitters, and in trade it stands for Authorised Economic Operator, a customs certification for trusted traders. If you landed here for either of those, this page is about the marketing meaning.
What is AEO in marketing, and why does it matter now?
AEO matters because a growing share of discovery now happens inside answers, before anyone clicks. When a buyer asks an AI system for "the best payroll software for a 20-person startup," the brands named in that answer form the shortlist.
The scale is no longer speculative. In Alphabet's Q2 2026 earnings remarks, Sundar Pichai said AI Mode had surpassed 1 billion monthly active users and that AI features send "billions of clicks to websites every week." On 15 October 2026, Google said it was adding more inline links and an "official sites" test to AI Mode and AI Overviews, which makes being one of the cited sources more valuable, not less.
Recognition alone is not enough, either. In Lantern's AI Recognition Gap study of four emerging brands (April to September 2026), ChatGPT correctly identified a brand in 95.0% of answers when the question named it. Yet only one of the four brands appeared in a live category test that did not name it, and that brand showed up in one of five audience-specific ChatGPT answers. AEO is the work of closing that gap between "AI knows you" and "AI suggests you."
How do answer engines choose what to cite?
Answer engines retrieve candidate pages from a search index, pull the passages that answer the question, generate a response, and attach links to the sources that support it. Your content has to be reachable, retrievable for the sub-questions the engine asks, and credible enough to be chosen.
Google describes the two core techniques in its guide to optimizing for generative AI features, published in May 2026 and updated in July:
- Retrieval-augmented generation (grounding): the model relies on Google's core ranking systems to retrieve relevant, up-to-date pages, then generates a response with clickable links to the pages that support it.
- Query fan-out: the model issues several related searches at once. Google's own example: "how to fix a lawn that's full of weeds" may fan out to "best herbicides for lawns," "remove weeds without chemicals" and "how to prevent weeds in lawn." Our explainer on query fan-out shows how to plan content around it.
The important difference between engines is which index they search and which crawler builds it. Blocking the wrong user agent can remove you from one engine while leaving you visible in another.
| Answer engine | Where web results come from | Crawler to allow | First-party reporting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google Search index, via core ranking systems and query fan-out | Googlebot | Search Console Generative AI performance report |
| ChatGPT search | OpenAI's own crawl plus search partners | OAI-SearchBot | Referral visits tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com |
| Perplexity | Perplexity's own crawl plus user-triggered fetches | PerplexityBot | None; use referral analytics |
| Claude | Anthropic's search crawl plus user-triggered fetches | Claude-SearchBot | None; use referral analytics |
| Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries | Bing index | Bingbot | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance (preview) |
OpenAI's crawler documentation is explicit that OAI-SearchBot controls whether a site appears in ChatGPT search answers, while GPTBot is only for model training. Anthropic draws the same line between Claude-SearchBot and ClaudeBot, and Perplexity says PerplexityBot exists to surface and link sites in its results, not to train models.
How AEO relates to SEO
For Google, no. Google's guide says that "optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO," because its AI features run on the same ranking and quality systems. For everyone else, partly: other answer engines use their own crawlers and indexes, lean heavily on third-party sources, and have to be measured differently.
That nuance is the whole debate, so we cover it in a dedicated comparison: AEO vs SEO: key differences and why you need both. If your question is how the day-to-day work, tooling and budget change, read AI SEO vs traditional SEO.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO and GEO (generative engine optimization) describe nearly the same work and are often used interchangeably. AEO is the older, broader term rooted in snippets and voice answers; GEO comes from a 2023 research paper and focuses specifically on generative models that synthesize and cite sources.
In practice, pick one term for your team and stop debating it. Our guide to generative engine optimization covers the GEO side, including the research behind it.
The six outcomes AEO should win
"AI visibility" is not one number. Lantern's AI Recognition Gap research measures six separate outcomes, because a brand can score well on the first and still be absent from the ones that drive revenue.
| Stage | What it means | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Recognized | AI can explain your brand when the question names it | Ask branded questions; score accuracy |
| Cited | AI links to your site, or another relevant site, as a source | Log source links in each answer |
| Associated | AI connects you with the right category, audience and use case | Ask "what is [brand] best for?" style prompts |
| Discovered | AI includes you when the question does not name you | Run unbranded category prompts |
| Recommended | AI presents you as a suitable option | Check position and framing in shortlist answers |
| Visited | A person clicks from an AI answer to your site | Referral data and AI-tagged sessions |
Most early AEO programs stall between "recognized" and "discovered." Treat each stage as its own goal with its own tactics, rather than chasing a blended score.
How to improve AEO: an eight-step strategy
A working AEO strategy is SEO fundamentals plus four additions: test the questions buyers actually ask, make sure every engine can reach you, publish evidence worth quoting, and earn confirmation on sites you do not own. Run these steps in order.
- Build a prompt set that mirrors real buyers. List the questions customers ask at each stage, including audience, location and problem details ("for a nonprofit," "in Texas," "without a developer"). Aim for at least 100 prompts: in Lantern's research, expanding a tracked set from 10 to 100 questions cut variation in reported brand coverage by about 73%.
- Confirm every answer engine can reach your pages. Check robots.txt for Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot, and make sure your CDN or firewall is not blocking them. The free AI Crawler Checker shows which bots your rules allow and the exact rule behind each decision. Many AI crawlers do not render JavaScript, so key content should be in the HTML your server sends.
- Lead each section with the answer. Open with a one- or two-sentence direct answer, then the detail. This is good writing for humans first; it also makes a passage easy to quote. Google is clear you do not need to break pages into tiny chunks or write "for AI," so do not contort your content.
- Publish non-commodity evidence. Original data, first-hand testing, named expert quotes and specific numbers give an engine something no other page offers. Google's guide warns against content that "could easily be produced by a generative AI model," and the KDD 2024 GEO study found that adding quotations, statistics and cited sources raised visibility in generative answers by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing did not help.
- Give every important claim its own page. A homepage cannot answer every question. Create focused product, use-case, audience, comparison and trust pages, each answering one buyer question. In Lantern's Beyond the Homepage research, ChatGPT cited one tracked brand's editorial pages most (38.1% of its owned citations), while Google AI favored its product and service pages (53.6%).
- Earn independent confirmation. In Lantern's research on where new brands earn AI authority, independent sources supplied 67.7% of ChatGPT and 77.6% of Google AI citation activity for emerging brands, while brand-owned pages supplied 1.1% and 0.5%. Prioritize accurate coverage on the publications, directories, review sites and communities that already appear in answers for your category. Skip manufactured "mentions," which Google says are not as helpful as they might seem.
- Keep your facts consistent and current. Pricing, features, locations and leadership should match across your site, profiles and listings. For local and ecommerce brands, Google points to Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profiles as inputs to AI answers.
- Measure by platform and by stage. ChatGPT and Google AI behave differently, so one blended average can hide a strong result on one and a weak result on the other. Report each engine separately against the six outcomes above.
Start with your weakest stage: If AI already recognizes you but never recommends you, more definitional content will not help. Shift effort to steps 5 and 6: specific pages and third-party evidence.
Example: turning a section into an answer-ready passage
Here is a typical product-page paragraph and an AEO rewrite. The rewrite leads with a direct answer, names the audience, adds a verifiable specific and stands on its own if quoted.
BEFOREOur platform was built from the ground up with growing teams in mind. Webelieve payroll should be simple, which is why thousands of customers trustus to handle everything from onboarding to year-end. AFTER[Product] runs payroll for US companies with 5 to 200 employees. It filesfederal, state and local payroll taxes automatically, supports contractorsin the same run, and costs [$X] per employee per month (pricing as ofOctober 2026). Setup typically takes [N] days with a CSV import from yourcurrent provider. The rewrite answers the fan-out questions an engine is likely to ask ("who is it for," "does it file taxes," "how much does it cost," "how hard is switching") in four sentences. Replace the bracketed values with real, current facts; an inaccurate specific is worse than none.
How do you measure AEO?
Measure AEO with first-party platform reports where they exist, referral analytics for clicks, and a repeated prompt panel for everything that happens without a click. No single tool sees all six outcomes.
| Source | What it shows | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console Generative AI performance report | Impressions and pages in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI features, by country, device and date | Google only; no prompts or competitor data |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Citations, cited pages and sampled grounding queries in Copilot and Bing AI summaries | Public preview; Microsoft surfaces only |
| Analytics referrals | Sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and similar | Clicks only; misses zero-click influence |
| Prompt panel tracking | Mentions, citations, sentiment, position and share of voice across engines | Answers vary run to run; needs a large prompt set |
Google launched the Search Console Generative AI performance reports on 3 June 2026 and rolled them out to all sites worldwide by 31 August 2026. Microsoft introduced AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools on 10 February 2026, including the grounding queries that pulled your pages into answers. OpenAI's publisher FAQ confirms ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so those visits can be segmented in analytics.
For the engines with no first-party dashboard, you need prompt tracking. Lantern's free AI Visibility Report is a quick baseline: it shows how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude surface your brand, with visibility scores, citations and share of voice.
AEO myths you can ignore
Several popular AEO "hacks" are unsupported by how the platforms say they work. Google's guide includes a mythbusting section, and recent changes to Search remove a few more.
- "You need an llms.txt file." Google Search does not use llms.txt and says it "will neither harm nor help" your visibility there. It may still be useful for other tools; see our llms.txt guide before investing time.
- "Special AI schema will get you cited." There is no special schema.org markup for AI features. Structured data is still worth using for rich result eligibility.
- "FAQ schema wins answer boxes." Google deprecated the FAQ rich result in May 2026 and removed its documentation on 15 June 2026. Write useful FAQs for readers; do not expect a special display.
- "Make a page for every fan-out query." Mass-producing near-duplicate pages to target sub-queries can violate Google's scaled content abuse policy, and Google says a high quantity of pages "doesn't make a website higher quality."
- "A tool can guarantee AI rankings." Google notes that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Use tools for measurement and workflow, not for promises.
Lantern was built for the gap this article describes. It measures how ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude describe and cite your brand, connects that to Search Console and Analytics data, and uses specialist agents to turn missing citations into review-ready pages, refreshes and outreach that your team approves. If you want to see where you stand first, start with the free report, then work through the AI search readiness audit.
Frequently asked questions
What is AEO in simple terms?
AEO is making sure that when someone asks an AI tool a question your business can answer, the AI knows you, trusts your information and mentions or links to you. It is the answer-era version of trying to rank on page one.
Does Google support AEO?
Google does not treat AEO as a separate discipline. Its May 2026 guide says optimizing for AI Overviews and AI Mode "is still SEO" and lists several AEO tactics, such as llms.txt and content chunking, as things you can ignore for Google. The extra AEO work matters most for engines outside Google and for measuring answers rather than rankings.
What does an AEO agency do?
An AEO agency typically audits crawler access and content, builds and tracks a prompt set across AI engines, rewrites key pages to answer buyer questions directly, and runs digital PR to earn third-party citations. Judge one by whether it reports results per platform and per outcome, and be wary of any guarantee of placement.
Is there an AEO certification?
There is no industry-standard AEO certification as of October 2026. Courses and certificates are offered by SEO software vendors and online learning platforms, and they vary widely in depth. Hands-on results from a tracked prompt set are a better proof of skill.
How long does AEO take to show results?
It depends on the engine and the stage you are targeting. Fixing a blocked crawler or a wrong fact can change answers once pages are recrawled, while earning discovery and recommendations through third-party coverage usually takes months. Track a fixed prompt set monthly so you can see trends rather than one-off answers.
Does AEO work for small businesses?
Yes, and often faster in narrow niches, because fewer sources compete for specific local or audience questions. Keep your Google Business Profile and listings accurate, publish pages that answer the exact questions customers ask, and earn reviews and mentions on the local and industry sites that AI answers already cite.
