How to Show Up in ChatGPT: A Guide for Brands and Marketers
On this page

To rank in ChatGPT, make sure OpenAI's search crawler can reach your site, publish specific pages that answer the questions buyers actually ask, and earn accurate coverage on the third-party sites ChatGPT cites. There is no fixed ranking list. Success means being mentioned, cited and recommended often across many repeated prompts, then measuring that over time.

This guide explains how ChatGPT finds and cites sources (based on OpenAI's own documentation), a six-step plan, a prompt testing method that produces stable numbers, a diagnostic table for finding where you drop out, and how to measure visibility and traffic. Facts are current as of October 2026.

What does it mean to rank in ChatGPT?

"Ranking" in ChatGPT means how often, and how favorably, your brand appears in answers to relevant prompts. Unlike Google, there is no stable position one. The same question can produce a different list of brands every time it is asked.

SparkToro and Gumshoe's study of 2,961 runs (published January 2026) found less than a 1-in-100 chance that ChatGPT or Google AI returned the same brand list in any two of 100 runs, and roughly 1 in 1,000 for the same order. The authors recommend measuring visibility percentage, not position.

Showing up can happen in several ways, and they do not always happen together:

  • Brand mentions: ChatGPT names the company or product in its answer.
  • Website citations: ChatGPT links to a page it used as a source.
  • Product recommendations: the brand appears among the options suggested for a specific need.
  • Category visibility: ChatGPT treats the business as relevant to a particular industry, audience or problem.

A brand can be mentioned without its website being cited, and a page can be cited without the company being recommended. Treating these as separate outcomes is the first step to fixing the right one.

How does ChatGPT find information about brands?

ChatGPT answers from three places: what the model learned in training, what the user shares in the conversation, and pages it retrieves through web search. Search is the part you can influence most directly, because it pulls in current pages and shows citations.

According to OpenAI's ChatGPT search help article, ChatGPT may search automatically when a question would benefit from current information. It typically rewrites the question into one or more targeted queries, sends them to search providers, and may run more specific follow-up queries after reviewing the first results. If memory is on, saved details such as a user's city can shape the rewritten query.

OpenAI says ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers" and points users to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies for how those providers handle queries. It does not say how much any provider contributes, so treat Bing visibility as helpful rather than decisive (more on that below).

On ranking, OpenAI is brief: results use multiple factors and "placement is not guaranteed." To be eligible, sites must allow OAI-SearchBot and accept traffic from its published IP addresses.

Why third-party sources matter more than your website

ChatGPT cites other people's pages far more than brand sites. In Lantern's AI Recognition Gap research, which tracked four emerging brands from April to September 2026, third-party websites made up 98.9% of ChatGPT source links. Brand-owned sites were 1.1%.

A companion study on where new brands earn AI authority found independent sources drove 67.7% of ChatGPT citation activity and competitor sources 28.0%. In other words, ChatGPT often learns about your category from your competitors' pages.

Recognition is not recommendation

ChatGPT can know your brand and still not suggest it. In the same research, ChatGPT correctly identified a brand in 95.0% of answers to questions that named it, and 59.1% of ChatGPT answers included at least one source link. But only one of the four brands appeared in a live category test that did not name it, and only in one of five audience-specific answers (20%).

Step 1: Make sure ChatGPT can reach your site

OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that matters for ChatGPT search. OpenAI's crawler documentation states: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers," though they can still appear as navigational links.

OpenAI's crawlers and what each one controls
User agentPurposeEffect of blocking it
OAI-SearchBotSurfaces sites in ChatGPT searchYour pages are not shown in ChatGPT search answers
GPTBotCrawls content that may be used to train modelsSignals your content should not be used for training; search is unaffected
ChatGPT-UserFetches pages when a user asks ChatGPT or a GPT to visit themNot used for automatic crawling; robots.txt may not apply to user-initiated visits
OAI-AdsBotChecks landing pages submitted as ChatGPT adsOnly visits pages submitted as ads

The settings are independent, so you can allow search and block training. A minimal robots.txt for that choice looks like this:

robots.txt
User-agent: OAI-SearchBotAllow: / User-agent: GPTBotDisallow: /

OpenAI says search systems adjust about 24 hours after a robots.txt change. Also check that your CDN or firewall is not blocking requests from OpenAI's published IP ranges, a common silent failure. Lantern's free AI Crawler Checker shows which AI crawlers your robots.txt allows and the rule behind each decision.

Two more technical checks matter. Most AI crawlers read the raw HTML your server sends, so key facts should not depend on client-side JavaScript (see why AI crawlers do not render JavaScript). And if you want a page kept out of listings entirely, OpenAI's publishers and developers FAQ says to use a noindex meta tag and let the crawler read it.

Is Bing indexing relevant for ChatGPT?

Probably, but OpenAI has not quantified it. Its help article names Microsoft among search providers whose privacy terms apply, which suggests Bing results can feed ChatGPT search. Verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and fixing indexing errors there is a low-cost precaution, not a strategy on its own.

Step 2: Build a prompt set that mirrors real buyers

Start from the questions potential customers ask when researching your category, not from your keyword list alone. Conversational prompts carry constraints such as budget, team size, location and integrations that short keywords drop.

To build a focused prompt list:

  1. Pull relevant keywords from existing SEO research and Search Console queries.
  2. Turn each into the questions a buyer might ask, including "best X for Y", "X vs Y", "alternatives to X" and "is X worth it".
  3. Add audience and situation variants, such as "for a 10-person agency" or "in the UK".
  4. Group prompts by intent: learning, shortlisting, comparing and buying.
  5. Run each prompt several times and record the brands, sources and framing that appear.
  6. Prioritize prompts tied to products you sell and audiences you serve.

Size matters for measurement. The AI Recognition Gap study found that expanding a tracked set from 10 to 100 questions reduced variation in reported brand coverage by about 73%. SparkToro also found that human-written prompts for the same intent were rarely similar (an average semantic similarity of 0.081), so include varied phrasings rather than one "canonical" prompt.

Step 3: Publish pages that answer specific buyer situations

ChatGPT cites pages that answer a clear question well. A homepage rarely does that for every audience and use case, so create dedicated pages for products, services, audiences, comparisons and proof.

Lantern's Beyond the Homepage report looked at which owned pages AI cites for the brand with the broadest owned footprint. ChatGPT's owned citations went to editorial content (38.1%), product pages (20.4%), the homepage (16.9%) and trust pages (14.2%). Editorial and product depth both pay off.

Effective pages share a few traits:

  • A direct answer to the page's main question in the first paragraph.
  • Descriptive headings phrased the way buyers ask.
  • Specific facts: who it is for, what it costs where public, limits, integrations and alternatives.
  • Evidence such as data, examples, screenshots or customer outcomes you can substantiate.
  • Tables where a comparison is clearer than prose.
  • A visible "last updated" date that reflects real changes.

Step 4: Earn mentions where ChatGPT already looks

Because nearly all ChatGPT source links point to third-party sites, your off-site footprint often decides whether you are recommended. Look at the sources ChatGPT cites for your priority prompts, then work to be accurately represented on them.

Focus on:

  • Independent reviews and comparison articles in your category.
  • Industry publications and specialist blogs.
  • Relevant software directories and marketplaces.
  • Expert interviews, podcasts and original research others can cite.
  • Professional communities where customers share genuine experiences; our guide to tracking Reddit citations in AI search covers one of the biggest.

Keep it authentic. Paid or planted mentions that are not disclosed create legal and reputational risk, and they do not build the consistent evidence that makes a brand safe to recommend.

Step 5: Keep product facts specific, consistent and in feeds

Clear product information helps buyers and AI systems match you to a need. Make these details easy to find and identical across your site and third-party profiles:

  • Problems the product solves.
  • Intended users and use cases.
  • Core features and integrations.
  • Pricing and plan limits where public.
  • Differences from relevant alternatives.
  • Evidence supporting performance claims.

If you sell physical products, ChatGPT shopping is a separate route. OpenAI's merchant page says merchants can share product feeds that meet its specifications via SFTP, APIs or supported platforms, and Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated. As of October 2026, shopping is live for US users only, a self-serve merchant portal is planned, and OpenAI is moving away from standalone Instant Checkout so purchases complete on merchant sites. Our post on ChatGPT Instant Checkout changes has the background.

When ChatGPT gets your facts wrong, fix the sources it relies on first. Our guide to correcting AI hallucinations about your brand walks through the process.

Step 6: Measure ChatGPT visibility and refine

Track a consistent prompt set on a schedule, compare yourself with named competitors, and connect visibility to traffic and conversions. Report each outcome separately rather than blending them into one score.

Metrics for ChatGPT visibility
MetricWhat it measures
Brand mention rateShare of tracked prompts that mention the brand
Citation frequencyHow often the brand's website is cited
Share of voiceThe brand's visibility relative to tracked competitors
Source coverageWhich external sources are cited across tracked prompts
Answer accuracyWhether ChatGPT describes the brand, pricing and features correctly
Referral trafficVisits from ChatGPT in analytics
ConversionsBusiness outcomes from those visits

Referral tracking is easier than many teams assume. OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs for sites that allow OAI-SearchBot, so you can segment those sessions in Google Analytics. Our analysis of AI referral traffic and GA4 tracking shows how to set this up.

Running hundreds of prompts by hand every week is not realistic. Lantern tracks mentions, citations, sentiment, share of voice and AI referral traffic in ChatGPT and other engines, shows which sources competitors are cited from, and its agents turn gaps into review-ready content and outreach. The free AI Visibility Report is a quick baseline.

Where are you dropping out? A diagnostic table

Use this table to match a symptom to the stage where you are losing visibility. It follows the six stages from the AI Recognition Gap report: recognized, cited, associated, discovered, recommended and visited.

Diagnose ChatGPT visibility by stage

RecommendedListed but framed as a weaker optionCompetitor pages shape the comparisonPublish fair comparisons with evidence
VisitedMentioned but little referral trafficWeak landing experience or no linkStrengthen cited pages and track utm_source

Do ChatGPT ads help you rank organically?

No. OpenAI states in its approach to advertising that ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers and are labeled and kept separate. Ads can buy a placement below an answer, but organic mentions and citations still depend on the steps above. Our guide to ChatGPT ads covers the paid side in detail.

Common mistakes when trying to rank in ChatGPT

Most teams lose ground through a few repeatable errors:

  • Blocking OAI-SearchBot (or its IPs at the CDN) while trying to block training.
  • Judging visibility from a handful of prompts run once.
  • Reporting a single "position" for answers that change every run.
  • Optimizing only the website and ignoring the third-party sources ChatGPT cites.
  • Leaving outdated pricing or features live, which ChatGPT can repeat.
  • Counting mentions without checking accuracy, traffic or conversions.

Frequently asked questions

How does ChatGPT decide which brands to recommend?

OpenAI does not publish a ranking formula. ChatGPT combines what the model already knows with pages it retrieves through search, and it rewrites questions into targeted queries first. Brands that are consistently and accurately described across many retrieved sources are more likely to appear.

Is SEO for ChatGPT different from SEO for Google?

The foundations overlap: crawlable pages, clear answers and authority. The differences are the crawler (OAI-SearchBot instead of Googlebot), the outsized role of third-party sources, and measurement, which relies on repeated prompt sampling instead of fixed rankings. Our Google AI Overviews guide covers the Google side.

Does blocking GPTBot stop my site from appearing in ChatGPT search?

No. GPTBot controls whether content may be used for training. OAI-SearchBot controls ChatGPT search visibility, and OpenAI lets you set the two independently.

Can I submit my business to ChatGPT?

There is no general submission form for businesses. Product sellers can apply to share a product feed through OpenAI's merchant program, and Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated. Everyone else gets in through crawlable pages and third-party coverage.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

Crawler changes take effect in about a day, according to OpenAI. Content and coverage improvements take longer because ChatGPT has to retrieve and trust them across many sources. Track a fixed prompt set monthly and expect trends over weeks and months, not days.

Do more ChatGPT mentions mean more leads?

Not necessarily. A mention that frames you poorly, or that never earns a click, may not move pipeline. Track referral traffic and conversions alongside mentions to see whether visibility produces business results.

Lantern shows where competitors are cited instead of your brand in ChatGPT, finds the content and source gaps behind it, and puts agents to work on review-ready fixes, with your team approving what gets published.
