ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements that OpenAI shows below ChatGPT's answers to adult users on the Free and Go plans. Testing began in the US on 9 February 2026. As of 21 October 2026, ChatGPT ads run in 89 countries, more than 100,000 advertisers have used them, and businesses can buy them through a self-serve Ads Manager or through agency and technology partners.

This guide covers the full timeline, what the ads look like, who sees them, how targeting and privacy work, what they cost (with every reported number attributed), how to launch a first campaign, how to measure it, and how paid placements relate to organic visibility in ChatGPT.

The latest step came on 21 October 2026, when OpenAI expanded ChatGPT ads to 26 new countries, including 14 in Latin America plus Nigeria, South Africa, Ukraine, Bangladesh and Pakistan. OpenAI said more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT weekly and that it plans more formats, objectives, buying options and measurement.

What do ChatGPT ads look like?

A standard ChatGPT ad is a single, clearly labeled sponsored unit shown below a ChatGPT response. According to OpenAI's Ads in ChatGPT: the basics, each ad includes the advertiser name, favicon, a title, a short description, a landing page and an image.

ChatGPT ad formats as of October 2026
FormatWhat users seeAvailability
Standard sponsored adBrand name, favicon, headline, one-line description, image and link, below the answerAll advertisers in supported countries

Sponsored AgentsA conversation with an AI representative of a business, opened from an adLimited alpha, invite only

Search Engine Land's step-by-step guide from early campaigns (10 August 2026) reported creative limits of 50 characters for the headline and 100 for the description, with a square PNG or JPG image of at least 256 x 256 pixels. OpenAI's product feed documentation says feed-based ads have been among the strongest performers in the program.

One detail matters for organic strategy: products uploaded to an ads feed are eligible only for ads. OpenAI says they do not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations, though that may change. Organic shopping visibility runs through OpenAI's separate merchant program, covered in our post on ChatGPT Instant Checkout changes.

Who sees ChatGPT ads, and who doesn't?

Ads appear only for adult users on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI's Ads in ChatGPT help article says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not have ads, and Temporary Chats show none.

Other exclusions:

  • Under-18s. OpenAI does not show ads to accounts identified as belonging to minors, using account age information and age prediction.
  • Sensitive conversations. Ads are not placed near topics such as personal health, mental health or politics.
  • EEA and Switzerland. Personalized ads are not initially available there.
  • Opted-out Free users. Free users can switch to an ad-free experience with lower usage limits.

How does ChatGPT ad targeting work?

ChatGPT ads are matched to the conversation, not to keywords or demographic profiles. OpenAI says the system weighs the current conversation's context and intent, the ad's copy and landing page, and optional advertiser "context hints" set at the ad group level.

Context hints describe relevant conversations, topics or keywords, but OpenAI stresses they are "not exact-match keywords" and do not guarantee delivery. Ads are then chosen through a relevance-weighted, second-price auction, so the winner pays just above the next bid rather than its full maximum.

If a user has ads personalization on, ChatGPT may also use signals such as past chats and memory. Search Engine Land's early-campaign guide reported that keyword, demographic and in-market audience targeting were not available, that custom audiences needed at least 25,000 matched users, and that geography and reporting worked at country level.

What advertisers can and cannot see

Advertisers never see chats, chat history, memories or personal details. OpenAI says they receive only aggregated performance data such as views and clicks, and that it "never sell[s] your data to advertisers." Users can turn off personalization, hide or report ads, see why an ad was shown, and clear ads data.

What can't you advertise on ChatGPT?

OpenAI's ad policies (last updated 10 September 2026) ban some categories outright and restrict others. Landing pages are reviewed too, and an approved ad cannot point to a page with disallowed content.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

OpenAI does not publish a rate card. Ads are billed per impression (CPM) or per valid click (CPC), prices are set in an auction, and OpenAI recommends starting CPC campaigns at a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click.

Pricing has fallen fast since the pilot. Digiday reported on 17 April 2026 that CPMs launched at $60 and had dropped to as low as $25, with one agency putting averages closer to $45, and that minimum spend fell from $250,000 at launch to $50,000.

Self-serve buying removed most of the barrier. Search Engine Land's August 2026 guide said daily budgets can start at $25, compared with $200,000 minimum commitments during the pilot. The same author observed average CPCs of roughly $2 to $5 across industries and a warning in Ads Manager when a max CPC was set below $3.

OpenAI's Ads Manager site also advertises $500 in ad credit when new advertisers spend $500. Treat any price as a snapshot: auctions are young and prices will vary by country and category.

How to get started with ChatGPT ads

You can start in Ads Manager if your business is based in a supported country, or work with an agency or technology partner. OpenAI's May 2026 announcement of new ways to buy named agency partners Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP, and technology partners including Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue and StackAdapt.

Self-serve Ads Manager is available to advertisers in 56 countries as of October 2026, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, most of the EU, India, Japan and Korea, according to OpenAI's availability page. The billed legal entity must be based in a listed country, which is a different list from the 89 countries where users can see ads.

A practical launch sequence:

  1. Check policy fit. Confirm your category and landing pages comply with the ad policies before building anything.
  2. Set up the account. Sign in to Ads Manager with a work email, add your logo, set up billing, complete verification and invite teammates.
  3. Install measurement first. Add the OpenAI measurement pixel or the server-side Conversions API, and add UTM parameters to landing page URLs.
  4. Pick an objective. Choose views (CPM), clicks (CPC) or conversions (optimizes toward a conversion event, still billed per click).
  5. Structure by intent. Create one ad group per buyer situation, such as "switching from a competitor" or "pricing for small teams", with context hints written in natural language.
  6. Write conversation-shaped creative. Answer the question the user is likely asking; lead with the specific benefit, not a slogan.
  7. Add a product feed if you are a retailer. Use a hosted URL or SFTP, because OpenAI says feed items expire after two weeks.
  8. Set bids and submit for review. Start CPC near OpenAI's $3 to $5 guidance, then submit; ads must pass review before serving.
  9. Monitor carefully. Impressions, clicks and CTR refresh about every 15 minutes, but spend can lag seven to eight hours.

How to measure ChatGPT ads

Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. Judge the channel by cost per acquisition and downstream quality, not CTR alone.

Early results are mixed, so benchmark before scaling. In Search Engine Land's August 2026 guide, one advertiser's GA4 comparison of about 1,500 users showed a 0.21% conversion rate from ChatGPT ads against 3.71% from Google Ads, with shorter engagement time. That is one small test, not a benchmark, but it shows why conversion tracking must be live from day one.

A measurement checklist:

  • Use the Conversions API where you can; OpenAI describes it as the more reliable way to send events.
  • Tag every landing page URL with UTMs so sessions are separable in GA4.
  • Compare cost per acquisition against Google Search for the same offer.
  • Watch assisted conversions and branded search lift, since chat users may convert later.
  • Hold out a region or time period to estimate incremental impact.

How do ChatGPT ads relate to organic visibility?

Paid and organic are separate systems in ChatGPT. OpenAI's ad principles, first set out in January 2026, commit to "answer independence": ads do not influence the answer, and they sit below it with a label.

That means an ad cannot fix how ChatGPT describes your category. The answer above your ad may recommend three competitors, cite their reviews, and frame your product as an alternative. Lantern's AI Recognition Gap research found third-party sites made up 98.9% of ChatGPT source links for the brands tracked, so the organic answer is shaped mostly by what others publish about you.

Paid and organic ChatGPT visibility, decision matrix
Organic positionAds offAds on
Strong (recommended in answers)Capture demand at no media cost; monitor competitors' adsDefend high-value prompts and add a direct path to purchase
Weak (absent or framed poorly)Invisible for that prompt; fix organic firstVisible below an answer that may contradict your ad; fix organic in parallel

The practical rule: use ads to add reach on high-intent prompts, and invest in organic visibility so the answer above your ad supports it. Our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT covers the organic side, and what AI search ads mean for marketers compares paid placements across AI engines.

Make landing pages readable to OpenAI's ad crawler: OpenAI's OAI-AdsBot visits pages submitted as ads to check policy compliance and may use their content to judge relevance. Clear, specific landing pages help both review and matching.

Are ChatGPT ads worth it?

ChatGPT ads are worth testing for businesses with clear, high-intent use cases, a policy-eligible category and conversion tracking in place. They are a weaker fit for restricted categories, brands that cannot yet measure conversions, or teams expecting search-like conversion rates immediately.

Run a time-boxed test with a fixed budget, two or three intent-based ad groups and a cost-per-acquisition target. Scale only what beats your benchmark channel.

How Lantern helps with ChatGPT ads

Lantern Pro ($89 per month) includes ChatGPT ads, which Lantern's pricing page describes as the ability to prepare and manage ads in ChatGPT. Lantern's Advertising Agent plans, creates and manages campaigns for AI advertising surfaces, with humans approving campaign changes and spend.

Because the same platform tracks how ChatGPT mentions and cites your brand organically, you can see which prompts you already win and where paid placements would add reach. A free AI Visibility Report shows your organic starting point.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT have ads now?

OpenAI says advertising helps fund broader access to ChatGPT, including the Free and lower-cost Go plans. It has committed to keeping ads labeled, separate from answers, away from sensitive topics, and out of paid plans such as Plus and Pro.

How do I stop seeing ads in ChatGPT?

Ads do not appear on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu plans, or in Temporary Chats. Free users can also choose an ad-free experience with lower usage limits, and anyone can turn off ads personalization, hide ads or clear ads data in settings.

Are ChatGPT ads targeted?

Yes, mainly by conversation context. The ads system uses the current chat's topic and intent, the ad's copy and landing page, and advertiser context hints. With personalization on, it may also use signals such as past chats and memory; advertisers never see those conversations.

Do ChatGPT ads influence ChatGPT's answers?

OpenAI says no. Its "answer independence" principle means answers are generated for helpfulness, and ads appear separately below them with a sponsored label. Organic mentions depend on the sources ChatGPT retrieves, not on ad spend.

How much money does ChatGPT make from ads?

OpenAI has not published ChatGPT ad revenue. Its October 2026 update said more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since launch. Treat revenue figures you see elsewhere as estimates unless OpenAI confirms them.

Which countries can run ChatGPT ads?

As of October 2026, users in 89 countries can see ChatGPT ads, while self-serve Ads Manager accounts are open to businesses based in 56 countries. Advertisers elsewhere can sign up through Ads Manager to be notified or work with OpenAI's sales team and partners.
