AI visibility tools track how often and how favorably your brand appears in answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot. They run a set of prompts on a schedule, store the answers, and report mentions, citations, sources, sentiment and share of voice against competitors. The best one for you depends on engines, prompt volume, data method and budget.
This buyer's guide compares nine AI visibility tracking tools with verified engines, prompt limits and starting prices (pricing as of October 2026, checked on each vendor's site). You also get evaluation criteria, a cost-per-prompt comparison, a vendor RFP checklist and a trial plan. Lantern publishes this guide and is included; we did not run a controlled test of every product, so confirm details in a trial.

What is an AI visibility tool?
An AI visibility tool is software that repeatedly samples answers from AI search and chat engines for prompts you choose, then measures how your brand and competitors are represented. It is a measurement instrument. Some tools add recommendations or content work, but their core job is trustworthy data.
If you need a platform whose main job is improving visibility through content, technical fixes and outreach, see our comparison of the best GEO tools. For the concept and metrics behind this category, read what AI search visibility is.
What should an AI visibility tool measure?
A good tool reports each outcome separately and per engine, so you can see where you are strong and where you are missing. Composite scores are useful for trend lines, but only if you can inspect the answers behind them.
Lantern's AI Recognition Gap research shows why one number misleads. ChatGPT correctly identified the tracked brands in 95.0% of answers that named them, yet only one of four brands appeared in a live unbranded category test. The study measures six stages separately:
- Recognized: the AI can describe your brand when the prompt names it.
- Cited: the answer links to your site or a relevant source about you.
- Associated: the AI connects you with the right category, audience or use case.
- Discovered: you appear in answers to prompts that do not name you.
- Recommended: you are presented as a suitable option.
- Visited: someone clicks from an AI answer to your site.
Beyond these stages, look for share of voice against named competitors, sentiment, answer accuracy, cited domains and pages, and AI referral traffic. Accuracy matters more than most dashboards admit; our guide to detecting and correcting AI hallucinations about your brand covers what to do when answers are wrong.
How do AI visibility tools collect data?
Tools collect answers either by querying the consumer interface (as a user would), by calling model APIs, or by drawing on large prompt databases or panels. The method affects what you see, so ask every vendor which one they use for each engine.
- Interface capture reflects what users see, including citations and shopping cards. SE Visible, for example, says it collects "real AI responses using a browser and graphical user interface, not simulated answers or API-based results."
- API sampling is cheaper and more repeatable but can differ from the consumer product, especially for search-grounded answers.
- Prompt databases such as Ahrefs Brand Radar's index let you benchmark a whole market without writing prompts, but you do not control the exact wording.
Sample size matters as much as method. In Lantern's research, expanding a tracked set from 10 to 100 questions reduced variation in reported brand coverage by about 73%. A 15-prompt plan is fine for spot checks, not for a board report.
Google's own data is also available. Its guide to generative AI features in Search points site owners to the generative AI performance report in Search Console, and warns that no third-party tool has access to Google's internal ranking or AI systems.
How we evaluated AI visibility tools
We compared tools on eight criteria using vendor pricing and product pages reviewed in October 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a detail, we note it rather than guess.
- Engine coverage on the plan you would buy, including add-on costs.
- Prompt capacity and refresh rate (daily, weekly or custom).
- Data method (interface, API or database) and transparency about sampling.
- Metric depth: mentions, citations, sources, position, sentiment and competitors.
- Markets and languages supported.
- Reporting and data access: exports, Looker Studio, API, MCP.
- Team and agency fit: seats, projects, workspaces and white-label options.
- Pricing transparency: public prices, trials and overage rules.

What do AI visibility tools cost per prompt?
Price per tracked prompt is the fairest quick comparison, as long as you also compare engines and refresh rate. The table below divides each entry plan's monthly price by its included prompts.
| Tool and plan | Monthly price | Prompts | Engines included | Refresh | Price per prompt |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LLMrefs | $79 | 500 | 11 | Weekly | $0.16 |
| SE Visible Basic | $99 | 200 | 5 | Daily | $0.50 |
| Scrunch Starter (annual) | $250 | 350 | 7 | Not stated | $0.71 |
| Peec AI Starter | €89 | 50 | 3 | Daily | €1.78 |
| Otterly.AI Standard | $189 | 100 | 4 | Daily | $1.89 |
| Otterly.AI Lite | $29 | 15 | 4 | Daily | $1.93 |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | $99 | 25 | Not fully listed | Daily | $3.96 |
Three caveats. A daily prompt across five engines produces far more answers than a weekly prompt on one, so compare answers per month where vendors publish them (SE Visible states about 30,000 for Basic; Peec states 4,500 for Starter). Bundles such as Semrush One include an SEO suite. And credit-based tools like Rankscale do not map cleanly to prompts.
AI visibility tool RFP checklist
Send these questions to every vendor on your shortlist and ask for written answers. The answers are easier to compare than demos.
Data and methodology
- Which engines, models and interfaces do you query, and is each captured via the consumer interface, an API or a database?

- Can we see the raw answer text and citations behind every metric?
- How do you define mention, citation, visibility score and share of voice?
Coverage
- Which engines are included on the plan we would buy, and what do add-on engines cost?
- Which countries and languages are supported for prompts and answers?
- Can we track logged-out and location-specific answers?
Metrics and reporting
- Do you report each engine separately as well as combined?
- Do you track sentiment, answer accuracy, recommendation position and cited pages?
- What exports, API, MCP, Looker Studio or BI connectors are available, and with what limits?
- Can you connect AI referral traffic from Google Analytics?
Workflow and team fit
- How many seats, brands, projects and client workspaces are included?
- Do you offer white-label reports for agencies?
- What does the tool recommend when it finds a gap, and can it produce work or only advice?
Security and commercial terms
- Do you support SSO, role-based access and audit logs?
- Do you hold SOC 2 or similar certifications?
- Who owns the collected data, how long is it retained, and can we export it all on exit?
- What are the overage rules, contract length and cancellation terms?
How to run a fair AI visibility tool trial
Test shortlisted tools side by side on identical inputs for at least two weeks. Differences in prompts, markets or dates make comparisons meaningless.
- Fix your inputs: the same 50 to 100 prompts, the same competitors, the same country and language.
- Spot-check answers by hand in each engine on day one and compare them with each tool's capture.
- Inspect evidence, not scores: open the answer text, citations and cited pages behind a few headline metrics.
- Check stability: re-run on different days and note whether trends hold or mostly reflect volatility.
- Test reporting: build the report your executives will actually read and export the raw data.
- Price the real configuration: engines, prompts, seats, markets and add-ons you will need in six months.

Tie visibility to traffic: Visibility shows representation, not visits. Pair any tool with AI referral tracking in GA4; our analysis of AI referral traffic sources and tracking shows how to set it up.
When is a monitoring tool enough?
Monitoring is enough when you already have strong SEO, content, PR and publishing processes and simply need trustworthy evidence. In that case, choose for data quality, coverage and reporting.
A platform with execution becomes worth it when insights repeatedly stall between the dashboard and published work. That is the dividing line between this guide and our GEO tools roundup: trackers tell you where you stand; GEO platforms also help you move.
How Lantern helps
Lantern combines AI visibility measurement with the work that follows it. It tracks mentions, citations, sources and share of voice across the major AI engines, links them to Search Console and analytics data, and lets agents prepare briefs, content and outreach for your team to approve.
To see your own baseline before evaluating vendors, request a free AI visibility report. It shows where your brand appears today and which sources shape the answers in your category.
Frequently asked questions
Are there free AI visibility tools?
Yes. Ahrefs offers a free AI Visibility Checker that previews mentions and top cited domains without signup, Lantern has a free plan for ChatGPT, and Profound offers a free 7-day trial. Google Search Console's generative AI performance report covers Google's own AI features. Free options are good for a first look but limit prompts, engines or history.
How do I monitor my brand's visibility in AI?
Define 50 to 100 prompts your buyers ask, run them across the engines they use, and record mentions, citations, sources and competitors for each engine. Repeat on a fixed schedule, daily or weekly, and track AI referral traffic alongside. A tool automates the sampling and storage; you still need to review the answers.
What is the best AI visibility platform?
It depends on your job. SE Visible and LLMrefs offer the most prompts per dollar, Peec AI is strong for analytics and reporting, Semrush and Ahrefs suit existing customers, Profound suits enterprises, and Lantern suits teams that want measurement connected to execution. Shortlist two or three and run the same trial on each.
Can AI visibility tools show every prompt people use?
No. Tools observe a sample of prompts that you define or that come from a vendor database. Vendors that show prompt volumes estimate demand from panels, search data or other sources, so ask how those estimates are built before relying on them.
Is AI visibility the same as website traffic?
No. Visibility measures how you are represented inside AI answers, and many of those answers produce no click. Referral traffic counts visits that reached your site. Track both, and do not assume one causes the other without testing.
How often should AI visibility be measured?
Match the cadence to the decision. Daily tracking helps during launches, campaigns or reputation issues; weekly or monthly trends are usually enough for strategy. More frequent runs on a tiny prompt set are less useful than a larger prompt set run weekly.
